High-profile, beloved actor enters rehab for alchol abuse
Comedian and Oscar-winner Robin Williams has entered rehab for alcohol abuse after being sober for two decades. Entertainment Tonight (ET) broke the news yesterday.
A rep for the actor, Mara Buxbaum, released the following statement to ET: "After 20 years of sobriety, Robin Williams found himself drinking again and has decided to take proactive measures to deal with this for his own well-being and the well-being of his family. He asks that you respect his and his family's privacy during this time. He looks forward to returning to work this fall to support his upcoming film releases."
Besides the recently released, The Night Listener, in which Williams plays a radio host who becomes involved with a young listener who claims to be a child-abuse victim, the actor has three more movies coming to theatres this year.
He plays another talk show host who runs for president in the upcoming film, Man of the Year, due out in October, supplies the voice of a penguin in the polar cartoon Happy Feet, set for November, and co-stars opposite Ben Stiller and Owen Williams in a comedy hitting theatres in December, Night at the Museum.
It's well-known that Robin Williams has tangoed with addiction before, notably while working on Mork & Mindy, the 1970s show that launched his career. He's even used jokes about his excessive drinking in his stand-up comedy routines.
The beloved comedian won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his dramatic turn in Good Will Hunting opposite Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in 1998, and has been acclaimed for numerous other films including Dead Poets Society and The Fisher King.
