Georgi State University held the Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation to honor the recipients of the Martin Luther King Jr.

These awards honor individuals and organizations that have contributed to the promotion of diversity and service-learning throughout the university and the community.

Who Is Michael Eric Dyson?

The MLK Convocation consisted of the award ceremonies, a speech from the Keynote Speaker, and a post-event dinner celebration. The Keynote Speaker of this event was Michael Eric Dyson an advocate for racial justice. He was chosen by the Office of Student Life and Leadership to be the keynote speaker.

Michael Dyson was a factory worker, single father, and welfare recipient. However, much of this changed when he started going to college. His hard work and dedication have led to him holding a Ph.D in religion, which he received from Princeton University. His degree has paved the way for him to become a Baptist minister.

Research and Writing

Michael Dyson is well known for the many books he has written and published, including Race Rules: Navigating the Color Line, Martin Luther King’s Death and How it Changed America, and Why I Love Black Women. These books examine the ideals of various civil rights leaders and how their work has impacted the nation.

Furthermore, Mr. Dyson is a professor at Georgetown University, where he teaches courses in religion, English, sociology, and African-American Studies. He has also taught at other universities, including DePaul University, Chicago Theological Seminary, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Mr. Dyson has conducted extensive research on hip-hop music. For instance, in his book Know What I Mean? Mr. Dyson discusses the controversial side of hip hop, particularly the use of them in loud block parties.

Media Attention

Mr. Dyson has also hosted his own syndicated talk radio program. The Michael Eric Dyson Show aired on the One Radio Network and focuses on the African-American community is impacted by American culture. He has also spoken on National Public Radio, CNN, and the HBO program Real Time With Bill Maher, a talk show that covers current events as they pertain to politics.

Michael Eric Dyson has spoken at the Democratic convention about the impact that Barack Obama’s presidential nomination will have on the nation, particularly the African-American community. Being present during Obama’s acceptance speech, he analyzed Obama’s words and reflected on how the president-elect will strive to achieve racial justice.
