The Police members Sting, Summers and Copeland announced today, Feb 12, that they are reuniting for a world tour which starts May 28, 2007
To the delight of fans around the world, The Police announced today, Feb 12, to the packed West Hollywood club the Whisky, that they were reuniting for a world tour. Half news conference, half dress rehearsal, they then proceeded to play a few songs, ribbing each other for mistakes the whole time. They dusted off old favorites including "You Make the Best of What's Still Around," "Message in a Bottle," "When the World is Running Down," and "Roxanne."
The tour, which will kick off in Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 28, will according to Sting be "simple but spectacular…three guys on stage. That's all." After a run in North America, the band will please other fans worldwide with performances in Europe, South America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
The three performers' last time together as The Police was during their 1984 tour for the album Synchronicity. Shortly after, Sting, wanting more creative freedom, left the band and launched his own spectacularly successful solo career. He's remarked on several occasions that a reunion would never happen, going so far as to say that if he agreed to one, he should be considered certifiably insane. His change of mind? He says he just woke up one day a few months ago and decided to try an idea of a tour out on Summers and Copeland. They agreed.
The Police have in fact performed together recently, on March 10, 2003, when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and performed "Roxanne," "Message In a Bottle," and "Every Breath You Take." This past Sunday night they opened the 49th Annual Grammy Awards at Staples Center in Los Angeles with "Roxanne," feeding the excitement over rumors and speculation about their 2007 reunion.
