To reach his current success Tyler had to take the journey, trouble and heartache at times leading the way.

Tyler Perry Bio

His beginnings are in the South. Tyler Perry was born on September 14, 1969 in New Orleans, Louisiana. His birth name is Emmitt Perry, Jr. His father and his relationship with strained. Tyler has spoken publicly about the troubled relationship he and his father had, a strain that at times left Tyler angry. Root of some of the trouble he shared with his father was due to the fact that Emmitt Perry, Sr. abused his wife, the same woman who was Tyler’s mother. Although his father worked as a carpenter and his mother worked as a school teacher, financial times were hard for the Perrys. While in his mid-teens Tyler dropped out of school. It is no wonder that his plays, movies and books speak of hope.

Years later Tyler went back and got a GED. But it was his creative, artistic and business acumen that would springboard him into a diverse and flourishing career. The fact that Tyler fully owns all of his major motion pictures at a time when many hit movies are produced at major production houses lends increased credence to the artist’s tenacity.

At the age of 23 Tyler Perry relocated from New Orleans to what many consider to be the “New York City of the South”, Atlanta, Georgia. It was from here that Tyler’s first stage play opened. Hope and faith followed the playwright to his new home but success wasn’t the first thing he met when he got to Atlanta. In fact, Tyler struggled again. The difference between when he struggled as a child living at home amid his parents’ strained relationship and his father’s own unresolved anger was that in Atlanta Tyler was doing what he loved. He was following his heart.

The Birth of 34th Street Films

It would take six years for the work to start to reveal itself and pay off. As Tyler continued to write letters to deal with abuse and heartache he’d experienced growing into a man, he began to heal. At one point he was able to forgive his father for the abuse he’d endured and, as if there was a cosmic connection between the forgiveness and the success of his current play, audiences started to pack Atlanta’s Fox Theater where his play was running.

Tyler Perry had spent all of his money to support and keep the play running. The packed houses allowed him to earn a profit which he used to focus on the next steps in fulfilling his dreams. Two years after Tyler Perry’s stage play took off in Atlanta, the artist was a household name throughout the United States.

In 2008 Tyler Perry started his own production firm called 34th Street Films. Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith, Cicely Tyson, Sidney Poitier and Ruby Davis were amongst the celebrities in attendance at the grand opening of the production house. Since his career took off Tyler Perry has worked with actors and actresses such as Angela Bassett, Cicely Tyson, Rick Fox, Janet Jackson, Tasha Smith, Sharon Leal, Jill Scott, Malik Yoba, Lamman Rucker, Alfre Woodard and Kathy Bates.
