This is the last time I'll write about the Pantyless Princesses of Hollywood. Swear.
I've been interviewing stylists this week for a story about the Oscars and I asked them what's behind the No Underwear Trend (NUT). Do stylists tell the stars to stay away from knickers because of the dreaded lines? Or do stars take it upon themselves to go commando when wearing uber-short dresses?
Turns out NUT occurs because of a bit of both. One high-profile stylist, who shall remain nameless, but has dressed Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, and Brad Pitt, said it's just a desperate flash for attention. In Britney Spears' case he suggests she was trying to draw paparazzi flashbulbs away from Kevin Federline (not a hard job on any day) and her divorce but mostly, he said, she's just horribly vulgar. And she likes to play with the press. I don't see how showing her va-jay-jay is going to help her custody battle, but....whatever!
This week Ms. Britney posted an apology of sorts on her website in which she said she was thrilled at the new Victoria's Secret holiday line. I guess she'll be shopping there as well as at the Le Bra boutique in Westwood where she (and Katie Holmes) have dropped thousands of dollars on Swarovski-encrusted underthings.
So back to the stylists - I spoke to another woman, whose clients include Angelina Jolie, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tom Cruise, and Katie Holmes, and she said that sometimes no underwear is the way to go. But only under a long gown that isn't see-through. Typically the stylist has a nude thong or a full-body slimmer so even the skinniest person doesn't get the dreaded sausage-link look at the waist.
So there you have it - sometimes the stylist makes the suggestion and other times, it's the choice of the trashy starlet.
