I don’t remember the first Bond film I ever watched – perhaps it was Octopussy, For Your Eyes Only or From Russia, With Love. I was too young to go to the cinema but there were Bond films on TV all the time. The content was quite naughty but I was too little to get a lot of the sexual jokes.
What I remember most is crushing on a dashing Sean Connery. He was so handsome 30 years ago. And I remember my mum talking about some dude named George Lazenby and how he wasn’t so good and how Roger Moore was a distant second to Connery.
Bond was handsome, strong, and always saved the day. My sister, brother and I were fans of The Six Million Dollar Man and, woohoo, Bond put Steve Austin to shame! (Sorry Lee Majors – I crushed on you, too, though!) I mean Agent 007 was a martini snob, always impeccably dressed, elegantly violent, and couldn’t ever seem to get his fill of sex. He wasn’t like anyone I’d ever met.
Like I said that was yeaaars ago. And since then, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan have gone on-screen to bed woman around the world and to catch the crooks.
When I think back on some of the names of the other characters like Pussy Galore or Alotta Fagina (oh, wait, that was from an Austin Powers flick), I can’t help but laugh. Such a high fromage factor and yet, the franchise stayed charming and kept luring viewers.
Last week, it was Daniel Craig’s turn to dazzle the world in Casino Royale. Reviews were mixed.
As I write this I’m about to get on a plane for Atlanta, Georgia, to celebrate U.S. Thanksgiving with the in-laws. So I’ve not yet had a chance to see the film. When I’m back in California though, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the best Bond and your picks for the actor who has the highest celebrity factor.
