Behind the scenes at Rock Star: Supernova

Summer's winding down and with it comes the finale of one of my favourite shows Rock Star: Supernova.

From the hot day in June when I went to the Silver Lake mansion to interview the band members, Tommy Lee, Jason Newsted, Gilby Clarke and all the contestants as well as Dave Navarro, I was hooked. They're such a bunch of quirky, profanity-laced partiers, you could say they had me at hello. Well, they had me at "How the @#$%^k are you?" Yeah it was like that.

We sat poolside at that magical massive residence overlooking L.A. that is decorated to look like a Moroccan palace. Tommy chain-smoked and cussed, shirtless with tattoos snaking up his torso and neck. Jason tried to explain the premise of the show while Gilby hid behind his funky shades.

On Sunday, me and my hubby, Danial, went to a taping on the CBS lot on Fairfax. The show airs tomorrow night (Tues.) and there are only six contestants left. My colleague,

Deanna , who covers reality TV will no doubt have more to say, but I thought I'd share some of the off-screen action.

In person Tommy cusses as frequently as he draws a breath. He's charismatic, standoffish and then he's all over you. Onscreen, he's funny, approachable and a bit of a softy, especially when it comes to chopping a contestant. He seems to genuinely dread sending someone home.

But what's notable about last night occurred in the final moments. Dave Navarro had been asked to re-shoot something. Earlier in the evening, he asked Dilana to name one lead singer who hadn't said stupid things to the media. She couldn't and his point was made.

The problem is he swore through the entire sequence and the show director told him to re-ask the question. Dave did the pick-up unsuccessfully several times. He was distracted because Tommy had stripped to the waist and was pacing in front of him. "Tommy's naked," Dave moaned and busted out laughing. Tommy responded with a "let's get the entire audience naked!" The camera followed Tommy and zoomed in on his butt crack. Don't expect to see that during the broadcast, maybe in the DVD outtakes?

Gilby was a surprise. During commercial breaks, he left his perch and walked over to see his wife and daughter who were sitting next to me. She pulled some photos from her purse and he nodded appreciatively and played with his daughter's hair. Remember when he chastised Jill Gioia for grinding him? This rocker is a conservative family man. You'd never know it from talking to him.

But that's the beauty of the entertainment industry - nothing is ever as it seems! For that reason, I'm not going to miss the Rock Star finale on September 13.
